In the 2024–2027 cycle, UEFA introduced the most radical structural transformation in European football history: the abolition of the 32-team four-club group stages in favor of a single 36-team unified league phase ("Swiss-System"). Below is the official analytical guide, projected qualification points calculator, and knockout seeding matrix.
Drag the slider to select a club's projected point total across 8 matchdays (Maximum 24 points: 8 wins).
Each club plays 8 different opponents (4 at home, 4 away). Clubs are divided into 4 pots of 9 based on five-year club coefficient rankings. Every club faces exactly two opponents from Pot 1, two from Pot 2, two from Pot 3, and two from Pot 4, ensuring balanced strength of schedule across all 36 contenders.
Unlike the legacy format where 3rd-place group teams transitioned into the Europa League knockout round play-offs, the Swiss-System operates without safety nets. Clubs finishing 25th through 36th exit Europe entirely for the rest of the season.
Rankings in the 36-team table directly dictate knockout seeding. Clubs finishing 1st and 2nd are placed on opposite sides of the knockout tree and cannot meet until the Final. Top 8 clubs receive second-leg home advantage in the Round of 16.
UEFA distributes over €2.467 billion annually. Base qualification earns €18.62m per club. Each league phase victory awards €2.1m (€700k for a draw), plus progressive league placement bonuses ranging from €275k (36th place) up to €9.9m (1st place).
When two or more clubs finish level on points in the 36-team table, ties are broken via:
In general, teams cannot play opponents from their own association. However, for leagues with 4 or 5 participating clubs (such as the Premier League or Serie A), UEFA allows a maximum of one domestic clash if necessary to avoid draw deadlocks.
At the end of each European campaign, the two associations with the highest single-season coefficient points (total points earned divided by clubs entered) each receive one additional automatic league phase berth for their 5th-placed domestic league finisher.
Clubs placed 9th to 16th are seeded and paired against clubs placed 17th to 24th in a two-legged knockout playoff tie in February. The seeded clubs enjoy second-leg home advantage. The 8 winners advance to face the Top-8 in the Round of 16.
