How is the Ballon d'Or winner voted and calculated?

The Ballon d'Or is decided by an international jury of 100 specialized sports journalists representing the top 100 FIFA-ranked nations. Each juror ranks their top 10 players, awarding 15, 12, 10, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 point respectively. The player with the highest cumulative points wins.

What are the official Ballon d'Or voting criteria?

The award evaluates three official criteria: 1) Individual performances, decisive and impressive character on the pitch. 2) Team achievements and trophies won during the seasonal calendar. 3) Class, fair play, and ethical conduct.

Who has won the most Ballon d'Or trophies in history?

Lionel Messi holds the all-time record with 8 Ballon d'Or awards (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, 2021, 2023), followed by Cristiano Ronaldo with 5 trophies.

⚖️ The 3 Official France Football Criteria

Since the 2022 regulatory reforms, voting is strictly based on the European seasonal calendar (August to July) rather than the calendar year:

1. Individual Performances Decisive goals, big-match moments, technical brilliance, and statistical dominance on the pitch.

2. Collective Achievements Trophies won with club and national team (Champions League, Euro, Copa América, domestic titles).

3. Class & Fair Play Exemplary sporting conduct, ethical leadership, and respect shown to opponents and referees.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why is voting restricted to the Top 100 FIFA nations?

In 2022, France Football reduced the jury from 170 nations to only representatives from the top 100 countries in the FIFA Men's World Rankings. This was designed to eliminate bias, ensure voters actively follow European club and international football, and raise journalistic credibility.

What are the Kopa Trophy and Yashin Trophy?

The Kopa Trophy is awarded to the best performing under-21 player in the world, voted exclusively by former living Ballon d'Or winners. The Yashin Trophy honors the world's premier goalkeeper, named after legendary Soviet shot-stopper Lev Yashin (the only goalkeeper to ever win the Ballon d'Or in 1963).

Does the UEFA Men's Player of the Year differ from the Ballon d'Or?

Yes. UEFA's award is voted by coaches participating in European club competitions (Champions League, Europa League, Conference League) alongside European journalists. Since 2024, UEFA and France Football officially co-host the unified Ballon d'Or ceremony.
