To balance league difficulty, only Europe's top 5 leagues on the UEFA coefficient ranking receive a 2.0 multiplier. Leagues 6 through 22 receive a 1.5 multiplier, and all remaining leagues receive 1.0.
Goals scored in national cup competitions (FA Cup, Copa del Rey, DFB-Pokal) and continental championships (Champions League, Europa League) do not count toward the European Golden Shoe.
If two or more strikers finish the European season tied with the exact same point total, the Golden Shoe trophy is shared jointly without tiebreaker exclusions.
Lionel Messi holds the unassailable record from the 2011โ12 campaign with 50 La Liga goals (100.0 points), making him the only footballer in history to reach triple-digit Golden Shoe points.

Because the Portuguese Liga Portugal currently ranks outside Europe's top 5 leagues on the UEFA 5-year coefficient table, its goals carry a 1.5 multiplier rather than 2.0. Therefore, 31 goals in Portugal equals 46.5 points, while 24 goals in the Premier League or Bundesliga equals 48.0 points.
